cleaning the SG
I have read references here about cleaning the SG. Is this a total dissassembly with a reduild of some type? Is there a proceedure written as to how to go about it as well as the rebuild parts needed. I tried a search on here for this and other things, but I must not how to search. If I search for statrter generator cleaning, I get all posts that have the word starter in it. ??

There isn't much to clean on the starter generators. If you pull the rear end frame (not the drive end) you can use compressed air to blow out all the brush dust that may have accumulated. If you have the SG with a bushing in the rear end frame just make sure it has a little lube (wheel bearing grease or equivalent) when you put it back together (some have a spring loaded cap that you are supposed to put in a few drops of oil in every oil change or so, some have no way to lube them). If the bushing is bad it can be replaced. If you have a bearing on the end frame it will more than likely have a spring loaded lube cap for some oil. Don't lube too much as oil and grease can only get to the armature and fields and while that is ok for a little while, oil can eventually break down insulation on windings. Brushes are available if they are really worn.

I take mine all apart to clean it and I believe it helps the starting of my cubs. If it is your first time taking it apart, then be careful to note how everything fits together....especially how the brushes fit into the spring loads. You can clean the inside with a lint free cloth and some mineral spirits to help remove the carbon dust from the components. Some guys on this forum videotape the process of taking things apart for the first time so that there is no guessing on how things go back together!
