Default 42 inch deck spindle

I've got an old 42 inch deck with the cast iron spindle housing. I just rebuilt it with new bearings, races, and seals ,reused the spacers that were in it and now I can't get it to preload the bearings. When I tighten everything down, the pulley is still loose, it's not contacting the upper spacer to allow it to tighten up and preload the bearing stack on the shaft. Does anyone have a drawing or the spacer-bearing stack up to show how this all goes together? maybe I'm missing a part or something.
Thanks,
Joe

The spacer probably needs to be ground down a bit so the bearings will preload. Where did you get the bearings? If you get them through Cub Cadet, I *think* they come as a matched pair with a new spacer so the preload will be right when you tighten them.

Yes, I got them from Cub Cadet dealer locally. Just 2 bearings and 2 races, no spacers came with the bearings. Does the pulley contact the top spacer to preload or is there a thin spacer that goes between the spacer and pulley.

Hmm...I can't remember. It's been awhile since I had one of the older spindles apart, but I believe there are quite a few spacers in there. Check the parts lookup to be sure.

Thanks, guys but thats not the same spindle as a 42 inch deck.there's a lot of good info there on that drawing, the drawing shows a taller spindle.Mine has both spacers that go through the seals and contacts the bearing inner diameter as well as a larger diameter spacer that fits in a groove in the cast housing that the bearing races seat against. I was wondering if there was another small spacer that goes on the top of that top spacer that the pulley should contact to allow the pulley to contact it first and not the end of the shaft, and preload the whole stack

How much up and down movement do you have?I redid one and the pulley had to be replaced as the spacer welded on the bottom of the pulley was worn out.

Thanks guys. i got a complete spindle from Patton Acres with the cast iron housing with broken ears, everything else was in good shape. Tore it all down, cleaned it all up, and installed the new shaft with the pulley that came with it and all works fine now. There was some space between the top of the shaft and the top of the pulley to allow it to preload. All is tight and running fine now. Thanks again guys and thanks to Rich Patton at Patton acres.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
