Hi guys!
I have a question about my Cub 127. I think I already know the answer, but I'm gonna ask it anyway. I was doing a bit of calculating tonight and figured that I already have about $700 in this Cub. That includes purchase price + Gas and meals on the road to bring it home + all tune up parts + recently ordered repair parts. So, now I'm thinking that I should change out the hy-tran fluid and filter. But, I'm wondering if that's really necessary? There are 2 new bolts in the rear end, so, I could guess that it may have been changed before I bought it? But, why take the chance, right? Is there any way I could check the fluid and see if it's good or bad? I don't wanna be a cheap skate if it's essential to change the fluid. Whadayathink? |

Hello Sir,
You could buy yourself a gasket and pull the rear cover off and empty it into a CLEAN pan. If its all spiffy in there, no sludge, etc reuse the fluid. Its red if clean. Look at the filter, is it clean, hard to judge but possibly might give you a hint! You could always call the seller and ask when it was last changed and what type fluid was used. I'm like most, real particular about using Hytran even in a gear drive. Hytran can not be beat, it is a bit more money though, but worth it. Take care Jason

I'd also change the Hy-Tran. You never know, what a previous owner has done, or not done to the tractor.

I'm gonna have more in my $200 cub by the time it's 100% functional than I could have bought one comparable, but I'll know for sure what's in her inside out. It'll be my way.
My cover had a few newer looking bolts. This is what I found inside when I cracked her open. Not alot of it......and what was there wasn't pretty. |

I would change the fluid and filter without thinking twice about. You can never be too careful. Order a new cover gasket and pop off the cover just to see what is inside. If you already went this far, why try to shortcut it. It will be money well spent. When ever we get a new tractor, I always change the fluids, and grease everything first.
