My 104 is in real need of a new clutch and I just saw an ad for a NF clutch but he doesn't list a model number - are all NF's the same?
By the pics it looks pretty good but being a rookie I can't be sure. Could you guys take a look and give me your opinion? Thanks! Neil http://portland.craigslist.org/clk/grd/2431126589.html |

If you need a new clutch, I would get a new one, not a used one. There's nothing guaranteeing that one is any better than the one you have, or that it'll last if it is. You can have the pressure plates turned on a lathe, and buy a new pilot bushing, friction disc, teaser spring, throwout bearing, main spring, new spirol pins, and make a driveshaft, and you won't have to worry about it for another 30 years or so. It'll cost about $150 but it is money well spent.

Duke,
My 104 has a creeper so if it's short for that reason I'm good to go. Matt, Actually, 2 dinner plates with a piece of plywood between would be an improvement over what I have now - but I hear ya - new is always better. But for 20 bucks this may be good for a short fix and it's local - I'm just trying to get through this mowing season - I've got to pull the motor this winter and do a bunch of frame work, replace the head gasket and it's wanting rings so I'll probably rebuild it and do a whole new clutch assembly then. Thanks guys! |

Hey Soaper,
I'll be doing a site search here shortly (I'm sure somebody has posted the procedure somewhere) when I find something I'll post the link. Yeah, my current clutch is in bad shape - the holes on the friction disk have egged out real bad, the teaser spring is in sorry shape, I had to do a weld rebuild of the hole for the pivot pin on the clutch arm and I just discovered the v-belt pulley that the three pin plate is attached to is missing a big chunk - all that adds up to some vibration that's not doing my 104 any favors. |

Soaper,
Go to the technical library for tractor here on the site and find the "Manual - Service Chassis" for your model number. For my 104 - Clutch removal and reassembly starts on 2-14 (Page 56 of the pdf file). I found all sorts of other posts regarding tricks and tips for doing this. I searched for: NF clutch removal Do some poking around and if you get stumped don't hesitate to ask the guys here ( I know I will once I get into it ) - they're great about lending a hand!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
