Default Kohler Identification

I just bought an older restoration 122 and I cannot make sense of the serial number on the engine. Hopefully one of you can help me out.

The numbers on the tag are as follows:

model: K301 A5
serial: B 068316
spec: 4759B

The serial number is incorrect for the year according to all the charts I can find. Can anyone shed some light on to this issue? Thanks!

The model should be K301AS which is a 12HP K-series engine.
Serial# B denotes 1966. The rest of the numbers are factory code for line and shift when the engine was assembled on that day.

Spec# starting with 47 denotes a K301(12HP)

Default kohler ID

Thanks for the reply. From what I have been able to find, the Kohler serial numbers from 1965 - 67 went from 127161 to 218009 (************************.com). I do not know where the 068316 came from. I guess I want to know if it is the original engine with the original specs and having a serial number so out of range from the series has me confused.

Kohler has a enige chart on their site. I would use that one before any other.

JAL11,

The serial number range of 127161 thru 218009 is the serial number on the tractor not of the engine. You are getting the two mixed up.
Look at the serial on your tractor and it should be between the above range.
The engine serial# of B 068316 came off of your Kohler engine. 'B' denotes it was made in 1966 and the rest of the numbers are factory code(line and shift at the factory when the engine was assembled on that day).

The infomation can be found on page 1.3 of a Kohler Service manual.

Best thing you can do is get Kohler Service Manual for Cub.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
