I am getting ready to put my newly aquired 1210 back into mowing service. My father in law bought it new. It only has 488 hours on it. It sat in a limestone floored building for about 15 years not touched. He took out the battery and there it sat. It ran good when he parked it and had no issues, he just didn't use it anymore. It is a hydro.
Before I even attempt to put a battery back in it and fire it up, I am going to shoot carb cleaner in the carb, then clean out the bowl. I am also going to change the oil and spark plug, as well as drain and flush the gas tank. The rear disk brakes work as they should. Is there anything else i should do before i try to start it? Thanks, Jason Btw...... The carb and choke parts still work and move well. The oil is black, but still liquid. The engine compartment does smell a little like tarnish, but I figure it is just old, stale gas. |

Sounds like you have a great 1210, I love my 1211...same tractor except it has hydraulic lift. Your on the right track, I would probably for-go just spraying the carb with cleaner. Its a pretty simple procedure to pull the carb off, and with the length of time its been sitting, it will most likely need a thorough cleaning of all the passageways in the there. Don't forget adding a new fuel filter as well, there always seems to be a little bit of gunk left in a tank even after you think you got it all out...ask me how I know ![]() Let us know how it goes ![]() Jeff (teet)

Yes, there was a mummified mouse in the air cleaner. There were no signs of a nest, just the mouse. Is there a factory filter on it or should I put an inline one on it?

Mice love cubs...fact! As far as the filter, my 1211 didn't have a filter on it when I got it, and I didn't think they all came from the factory with one either. There is a screen in the bottom of the tank that will catch most particles, but some junk still will make it through. You can splice a 1/4 universal small engine fuel filter into the line on either side of the firewall. The 1210 uses a fuel pump, so it may be necessary to find a non gravity feed style filter.

I hate to say this, but I usually go to a green dealer and get my fuel filters. I have no clue what the part number is. I just ask for a fuel filter for a garden tractor and they give me this real nice one for less than the price of a kohler filter. Deere's filter is smaller than kohlers but has the same amount of paper in it. As a added bonus, it's clear so you can see the fuel flow through it.

Ok, I have done all of the freshening to it. I found a carb leak, so I rebuilt the carb. ( A friend did it who had done quite a few of them) Keeping in mind the tractor has set for a long time, I started it. It quit leaking. It sounded great. It idled for a few minutes while i set the idle screw on it. It was running fine. I figured I would let it run for a while then change the oil again, just to be safe. I put the new air cleaner and lid back on, and reached for the side panel. (Left side, carb side). When I put the side panel on and finger tightend the nut on the back then hooked upi the front spring to hold the panel on, IT STALLED OUT DEAD. The new battery turned it over, te tank has a 1/2 tank of fresh new gas, and it won't re-fire. It will turn ver all day, but won't run. Could I have hit something when I put the side cover on to lose spark? It didn't smoke a bit. I mean oil, gas, or steam, the exhaust was clean. It just farted out. Any thoughts?

Are you getting spark? Did you ever drain the tank completely and flush all the junk out of it? Is there fuel in the bowl now? I cant see how putting the side panel on could somehow cause this, but I guess you never know....is the fuel line pinched or something? Trial and error unfortunately, but I would check for spark first since is the easiest to get to, and go from there re-tracing your steps

If you are getting spark, you may still have some fuel issues. It may have taken a few minutes for some bad fuel to get from the bottom of the fuel tank and lines to get to the carb if you didn't drain and clean the tank completely.

I drained the tank and actually flushed it out with a half gallon of fresh gas. When the gas quit coming out and it was as clean as it went in, I figured it was clean. The bowl on the carb didn't even show any particles. I will keep working after the weather get a little drier and warm. hopefully in the next 2 days.
