My cub 149 serial number 2050047U428352 is missing the engine side plate that is riveted on the left hand side of the engine flywheel cover. I was inquiring with a parts supplier about purchasing a new crank for the upcoming overhaul the tractor is going to receive. I was told that he could not help me out without the spec number from that tag.
My question is, could I use the spec number from someone else's cub 149 to assist me in ordering parts for my cub? I assume the spec number is an encoded number assigned by kohler that specifies what parts were included in the motor making it fit a cub 149 as opposed to a JD or WH, or am I totally off base? The parts guy said the make and model of the tractor meant nothing to him, he could only supply the correct parts with a spec number. I told him I could not sh** one for him, what was I supposed to do. He says why don't you just call cub cadet, maybe they could get it for me...he was truly a big help...I plan to buy all my parts there...NOT! I would appreciate any help you could provide me, thanks! Oh yeah, is there anyway to use the serial number off the tractor to determine it approximate build date...not that it really matters, just curious. |

I'm sorry but I'm not sure about the engine number tag. Napa can get kohler parts, the engine is a k321as.
About the tractor serial number, post it and I can tell yoi the month. Someone higher in the cub rank (menthos) will probably be able to give yoi the time of day lol

I say MATTG lurking around and pm'ed him with my questions. He is pretty sharp for a punk kid...LOL, just kidding, he is very helpful and knowledgeable about these cubs. He gave me the link to the production table, was figuring somewhere in March/ April 72. He also believes I could use a spec number off another K321 out of a 149 to order parts.
So anyone out there with a 149 K321, shoot me some spec numbers (actually hoping they all come back as the same number) when you get a chance, so I have something to use when a parts guy asked me for it. Thanks to all for you info and posts, reading them is making my new hobby as a cub restorer/ modifier/ owner more rewarding and easier! I know how everyone likes pics, will start a build thread when I begin to dis-assemble and rebuild my 149, and promise to take lots of pics! ![]() |

Must have been made when march of that year was either coming in or going out as a lion...just judging by how windy (blow by)it is!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
