Thanks everyone.

Nice rig Scott!

I realized that this 982 did not have the turning brakes, but there is a well aligned hole in the mower lift bracket which looked like a connection point. The rubbing bothers me, so I'll try to see how I can clear it.

As far as the Seafoam papaglide, I only put it in the gas. About 4 ounces/gallon. I did not want to draw it in directly into the carb because it wasn't running well enough. I was afraid to hydrolock the engine. I will try it before I pop the heads off.

I also found compression specs for the Onan P218 engine which indicates the acceptable range of 75-115psi. I wonder if its the same for the P220. I also found the 982 Owner's Manual link on this site, which contains the carb and governor settings. I have to get a hand tach! I wish the search engine could search for shorter strings, such as model numbers.....

Here's my working machines. The big one has turning brakes and the little one has a solid K301 :biggrin2.gif:

Deputy: I also own a 982. It's an age problem!! My 982 was NOS when I got it and also suffered similar symptoms. So, wuz I you, I'd rebuild/replace the carb, replace/rebuild the fuel pump, and install an inline fuel cut-off. The one below the tank is basically unreachable for normal use, so an inline cutoff where you only have to just barely lift the hood to cut on/off the fuel. This makes it easy to use and , most important, keeps gravitational fuel pressure off the fuel pump diaphram when not in use. BTDT!!. Runs like a dream now!! I'll repeat! Those "rubber" parts in the ONAN carb and ONAN fuel pump deteriorate and die with age!! They must be replaced!

Welcome DeputyRPA!
You have a good one.
You could try using Small Engine Tuneup by PB Blaster and apply it through the spark plug holes and in your carburetor it can make a world of difference.

Thanks guys. I'll try the PB Blaster first while I wait for the gasket set.

I gotta say, the 982 with 374 deck mows like a R***d Ape.

Lawn Mower Tune-Up
Eliminates hard starting problems by restoring power and compression to all two- and four-cycle engines. Stops leaks without halting production, and dissipates moisture while inhibiting against rust and oxidation.

Hey Guys..All the chemical magic in the world ain't gonna repair those bad "rubber" parts in the carb and the fuel pump. There are no short cuts or easy way out to rebuild/replace the carb and fuel pump..I've got a 982 with an ONAN B48G engine , BTDT and this is experience with mine talking!! Please pay attention....

Oh Myron
He said he was going to order some new parts these are just suggestions to get him by where he can enjoy it till they come in. That Lawn Mower Tune Up additive mentioned in my post sure worked great in my 982 this spring. What happened to you I needed some parts and never heard back from you.

Default Congrats!!

They are impressive tractors..quiet running and powerful..finally got all the parts for the deck on mine(50C), and tried it out..worked great, but might be too large for my hills and dales yard..think I'll leave the mowing to the smaller tractors and make a workhorse out of the 982

Yeah, I'm impressed. I have a few steep parts, mostly my walk-out basement area and my raised leach field, and the weight helps me keep some traction where my Ford just spun.

I have my engine tune-up parta on oeder. I can't wait to tighten it up and close it down, and hear it purr!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
