I got to looking at the K321 from the 149 I was going to restore. After pulling the pan I saw that the connecting rod had broken close to the crank. I pushed the piston up and saw that the cylinder sleeve was broken off on one side right flush to the block. Guessing the block is done. Could be unseen damage as well. The piston was was marked 10 over. The connecting rod appeared STD. I did some searching today on rod breaks and saw this kind of damage. When I got home sure enough this one suffered the same.
Project will have to sit now till I figure if and how to proceed. Craig

Wish I had something to offer positive, but I don't know what to advise about the cylinder issue.
I can tell you this much, when I got into my K321 the balance gears were all over the place, but still on the shafts. Both wobbled, didn't line up and were loose. So in rebuilding I plan to do as a lot of guys have suggested, leave the balance gears on the table when it come time to reassemble the engine. I can't see why they didn't destroy teeth or possibly come apart the way the both wobbled. I'll bet one thing, when your rod broke and it hit the bottom of the cylinder wall there was a lot of racket before the silence. Dave |

I pulled the crank to get a better look at the block. Flywheel was extremely hard to get off. Gave up and left puller on over night. Gave the end of the puller a slight tap and off it popped.
The crank journal looks ok. The cam appears ok. ACR springs and operation seemed ok. Governor gear looked ok but would have replaced anyway. I don't see any other case damage. Before pulling the crank I checked the cam and balance gear timing just out of curiosity. Cam timing seemed correct but the balance gears didn't. I know most say to pull the balance gears anyway. Piston was marked 10 over. As as option I'm going to start looking for a block or engine. I can keep this one for parts for now.

I found a K321 short block a short distance away at very good price. Turns out we had a mutual friend. Appears to be in good shape and it had a STD piston in it. Going to have it checked out and prepped along with my crank and then gather up what I need to complete a rebuild. Picked up a few extras as well. SG and 149 headlight panel.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
