I have a 104 with a K241 in it since i have 2 1450's that run and i can mow with i think im going to pull the engine out of the 104 and rebuild it, it runs ok but its tired and smokes alot. My question is, is there anything i can do to squeeze more power out of it like a different head or cam. I kinda want to make it a "sleeper" of sorts but i want it to be reliable so i dont want to put a bunch of expensive billet parts in it just looking for somthing easy to do while i have it apart. Thanks.

To to Kirk Engines web site they have the killer kohler build that they do that has great results.

I can do it for you, and I believe it really increases torque. Personally, I prefer heads with the plug near center of the Chamber.

I have the head from my 1200 already done. It has a stripped spark plug hole, easy fix is helicoil kit from NAPA. I ran it with my fresh rebuild, but for obvious reasons, I had to pull it. It is a high compression head (heart shaped fitted to valves) decked -.060 " and flat sanded.
Give me a call if you are interested. I Need to get a helicoil kit from napa anyway, I really want to use it on all the engines I build from here on out. |

Last spring I modified the the K241 in my 100. The motor was based on David Kirk's Killer Kohler that is in his 1250. I had the orginal high compression head on before the changes (motor was rebuilt 3-4 years ago) were made. Motor building 102 (mega horse power chapter) taught me to check the clearance between the valve and head before final assembly. I put a little play dough between the top of the valve(s) and head.....them spin the motor 2 complete revolutions. I couldn't get a single revolution because valve hit the head. I contacted David Kirk to see which head he would recomend to use. He suggested the head that has the spark plug over the exhaust valve. The spark plug over the exhaust valve head has the best flow out of all the factory heads. The head I'm using has .040 removed from it. The orginal tin that goes on the top of the had to modified because the spark plug position was change. I used a hole saw drill to make a new hole for the spark plug. I did have to make some bushings because the head was a low boss head.
I wouldn't use a high compression head on a every day use Cub Cadet. Yes I did loose a little compression.......the power is the same as a motor that has a high compression head on it. I feel I have a wider-broader power band with the spark plug over the exhaust valve. One other area that needs some attention is the clutch. I'm using a cultivator spring (500 pounds) in my 100. The red spring was too hard to push in several times a day.....plus you will need to add extra support to the area that the clutch arm connects to. |
