I was going to get something like this for that purpose. I just need the spare money (college bill and car that has a trans problem are very costly). It has good reviews and will work on almost anything, just remember that the item being measured can't be too shiny except for one spot, otherwise it will give a false reading.

Do NOT use your fingers! It don't work very well..:biggrin2.gif:
But seriously, any kind of small digital tach should work. if you have a hobby shop in your area, try and see if they have one , norm about $20 (US)..

I have an old dwell meter that I used to use on my cars back when I didn't need a computer to work on them. Have not tried it on a single cylinder Kohler but does anyone know if it would work? There is a tachometer reading on it.

In the same boat Weaverama. I have a Craftsman Engine Analyzer like this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...5015&viewitem= that I used for tune ups. It only has settings for 4-6-8 cylinder engines, and I haven't looked closely enough to see how or if it will work on single/2 cylinder engines. I use a Sendec tach/hour meter on my 982.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
