I picked up two CC mowers over the recent holiday weekend. Each one was a yardsale purchase for next to nothing. The 2145 is showing almost 300 hrs, the 2155 is showing 175 hours.
I got the first one in MO at a yardsale on someone's lawn while heading home after helping a buddy move there. I had a 20ft trailer in tow so I was shopping for deals on the ride home. The first one, the 2145, is complete but had no spark, and two flat tires, I gave $25 for it with a rear bagger, snow plow, and a mower deck. Plus it came with two Sears push mowers a jug of oil, and two new Hi Run tires. The second one was in WV, it was out on someone's lawn for sale with a big AS IS sign on it I stopped at a diner next door to get something to eat and walked over to check it out. The motor was out of it. The guy came out and told me he took the motor apart because it made a clanking noise when you shut it off. The hour meter is showing 175hrs. He had the motor apart on his screen porch, he showed me that if he put a finger on each side of the piston, it would rock back and forth nearly .010". The cylinder still shows its crosshatch pattern, the oil is clean, and it basically looks almost new. The headlight lens is missing on both. I got both of them home and starting tinkering with them. Right away I found the coil kill wire missing from the coil terminal, and the coil is badly rusted. Neither coil bolt will budge even with heat. I get the second machine, and I put that motor on the bench too, that coil is the same way but worse. The coil mounting towers on the 15hp are pitted badly and nearly corroded away. Its not the first time I've seen this on these motors but I always sort of chalked it up to the fact I'm only an hour from saltwater here. But these came from MO and WV. Is there a fix for a coil tower that's gone or too far corroded to mount a new coil on? |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
