I acquired this 1782 from a guy, that I buy my Welding gas from, a few years ago. It had sat a few years and he couldn't get it to start, which led to him butchering the original wiring harness. I bought it for $500, sure it would be a simple job to get running. It ended up being the rack in the pump was stuck in the off position. After I got t that moving, it was down to fixing the broken trans mounts (Xtreme motorsports kit), fabricating a new electrical system from scratch and fixing the holes and bad bearings in the Haban deck. After a couple years of mowing the D640 was developing a lot of blowby, so I decided that I would rebuild a D902-e2b core I had in the shop from a Kx40 excavator I had replaced for a customer a few years back. Went ahead and modified the pump, lightly ported and cleaned the ports in the head, modified an exhaust manifold, and installed a Garrett Turbo. Fitment was pretty straight forward as far as swaps go. The engine runs strong, starts instantly with no glow cycle time, and makes about 10psi of boost where the yard starts becoming a field. Since I was shortening the driveshaft anyway for the new engine, I went ahead and modified the trans end to use a yoke that collapses after removing a pin. Turned that job into a 10 min affair.

Sweet setup, I'd like to see more of the drive shaft since the parts are becoming hard to come by now.

Thanks, I'll take some more when I get home. I basically just cut the splined section off the shaft, cut the cv plate end of the adaptor off, drilled a 5/16 hole from the end of cut shaft through it, centered it on the adaptor and welded it on. I milled a slot for the keyway on end of shaft and drilled a perpendicular hole through for the yoke. I then turned the threads off leaving only the last 5 or 6 at the head of bolt on a lathe. That way I could use it as the pin to locate yoke on the shaft.

Nice setup! have you done anything with the cooling system? it was marginal in the deep south with the D640 at full tilt mowing..

Funny enough the d640 ran like 205 in the the summer stock and about 195-200 with a turbo. This d902 w/ turbo with the same radiator is running 185-190 lol. No idea why, but I've got it running a little lower rpm and it's making 8-10 psi boost full load. The D640 would only make 3-4psi

I turbocharged a new Kubota L3940 and ruined 3 pistons within 400 hours.
Top ring land eroded out and wrecked the bores. This was with 7 psi boost and an over fueled pump. After much thought I called a Kubota engine rebuilder in Ohio, Country S&S, they offered a steel top ring land piston for the same application that came in a turbocharged Bobcat. Problem solved, that was 10 years ago and I still use the machine daily. That's a really cool project!
