Stick with the Kohler parts. High quality and you know they're made for the engine.A little more expensive, but worth it in the long run.

I heard that there where problems with the stens rods. But the pistons where better then the kolher units. I've also thought I would buy 1 for a rebuild but I have never did.

Also, measure the bore of the engine before you order parts; there are two different bore sizes for the K161. If it is the earlier, smaller one, you can probably go to the standard bore later piston, as the earlier piston and ring sets, including the oversize ones, are all NLA as far as I know, and only the later, larger piston is still available. That will save some material in the bore for future rebuilds.

Yea, the Kohler parts are expensive. The piston and rod are more expencive than the whole kit on ebay.
We measured the bore and it looks like with a slight hone we can still use the standard size piston. I was just hoping that this kit would work. Who had good prices on kohler parts? |

I had good luck with these people. If it's in stock, I had it in 2 to 3 days. Prices were pretty good also. They are in Marietta, GA.

Don't overlook the aftermarket pulling parts suppliers. I've run Vogel and Lakota engine parts in my stockers. Usually priced higher, but better QC I think.

I went ahead and got the kit. After searching on the internet you guys are not the only people to buy this kit and be happy. Even found one guy that built engines for pulling that used these kits and he was happy. I expect it will work out just fine.
Thanks for the input. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
