I'm new owner of cub cadet 982 with 3pts and pto. I want to change the transmission oil and filter. No drain plug? I think we need to remove the rear housing plate but I have 3 point and pto.. no access.

What year is your machine? The aluminum rear ones do have a drain plug but not the CI rear machines. Being a new owner of it, I would pull all the pto stuff and remove the rear cover to clean and inspect.

You've probably heard this before, but it bears repeating. Try to use the OEM Cub Cadet hydraulic oil filter, and HY-TRAN for best performance. You'll also need the correct rear cover gasket. If it has never been changed before, it will lost likely have a great deal of moisture in the oil that will reduce it's performance.

You can remove the pickup tube on the bottom of the tranny to drain it, It is a 2 piece one... If it has a history of being changed, if not the udder way is the way to go.

if the unit has never been cleaned after 40 years of Lord knows what inside it, it is advisable to do do it right, you are leaning toward Hytran which is an expensive lube with just as good, lesser expensive substitutes lubes avail. why would you want to put big $$ into a toilet/cesspool? Purchase lesser expensive, but quality hydraulic oil and spend the saved $$ on a cub, Deer, wix or equivalent filter and gasket and clean up the cesspool in the reservoir. Disclamer: if the hydraulic fluid has been changed regularly then a drain/filter and refill is ok. Just my .02 cents ![]() |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
