Default 1872 Starter Removal

I have owned since new, a 1872 GT. The starter needs to be rebuilt or replaced. Is it possible to remove the starter without pulling the engine ?

Thanks !

Yes you can you need to have the correct size/shape wrench to do it. I think Matt G. has a write up on it.

Thanks Aagitch !

I saw that write-up by Matt. He references a IH682, so I was not sure if it would be applicable to a 1872 or not. I recently acquired a service manual for the 1872 and although there are several steps outlining the procedure for engine removal, there is absolutely nothing on starter removal.

There are only 6 bolts holding the engine plate to the frame and they are easy to get to from underneath the frame. I just unbolt the 6 bolts and lift/tilt the engine a little bit with the engine hoist to get the room to work and see what you are doing. It doesn't take long to pull the engine completely in these things once you have done it. However it's not necessary to remove it just get a little clearance to work.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
