Hello gentlemen,
I have a 1974 IH Quietline that has a blown head gasket. I have ordered the replacement but my question is. With these original 10hp Kohler engines do I need to tourque to specs when putting the head back on? Or can I just tourque down to tight? Any help is appreciated. Thank you

Yes, definitely do torque the head bolts to spec. Spec is in the range of 30-35 ft-lbs, 30 will do just fine. Be sure to look at the tractor service manual and find the head bolt torque sequence, and follow it!
Before you put it all back together, I have a recommendation. Because you blew the gasket, you may have warped the head or it was already warped and caused the gasket to blow. The way to remedy this is to take a piece of 220 grit sandpaper, and set it on a flat glass plate, then sand the surface of the head down until it is flat, making sure to keep a random sanding pattern so it works evenly. With the head on a flat surface, you should not be able to stick a .003" feeler gauge under the head in any area. Once back together, run the engine for a couple hours and then re-torque the bolts to 30 ft-lbs again. When you replace the head gasket, it compresses and the head bolts will loosen slightly. Re-torquing them will remedy this.

Thank you all for the help. Any idea where I can find the specs at for the bolt pattern when I torque it back down? This is the orginal Kohler 10hp.

This is what I did when I replaced the head gasket on my K161 for my 73:
-Sanded head flat on a piece of glass using Matt G's advice. -Decarboned head/top of block -Checked block deck for flatness with a straight edge. -Oiled cylinder wall -New gasket with copper coate -New head bolts - a drop of oil before install. -Torque specs are 15-20 FT LBS for this head, started with 15. -Ran for 20-30 min, made it work a small bit (driving it around, taking off in third gear with my fat butt on the seat) -After the engine cooled off (like next day) tightened the head bolts to 20FT LBS in the proper order 2-3 times making sure they were tightened properly.
