I purchased a 1972 cub cadet 126 a few months ago. I have mowed a small yard 7 or 8 times. the second time I mowed I stepped on the clutch/brake pedal and the brakes wouldn't do anything and the clutch wouldn't engage to changes gears - I had to turn the tractor off with the key - but When I started back up everything was fine and working as it should. Now just today when I was finishing mowing I clutched to switch from 1st to Reverse and the tractor wouldn't move after it was in R. I tried 1st again and still no movement I tried 2nd and 3rd and the tractor would very slowly move inches - I had a friend push me and after a little pushing the tractor moves again, but each gear seems just a little slower and now engine seems to run a little rougher ---I wasn't really paying much attention but in hindsight now I think the clutch has been harder to push all the way in to engage the lock mechanism the last 4 or 5 times I have driven her - Any thoughts ? thanks for your help

I haven't been in the same location as this tractor since this issue happened - but I was just trying to think of some things to check.
Wondering if the brakes could be sticking, maybe when the person pushed me it loosened them enough but still sticking enough to make each gear seem slower and the engine is rougher because it is under load ? Could it be something with the clutch disc ? Saw a video where a kid sprayed the crap out of the clutch assembly with something (WD40 ?) to cure a no movement condition - although mine seemed to be working well for a while so I'm not confident this is the same issue Its not a hydro so I don't think low fluid would be the issue ? |

Does your tractor have the internal wet brake or the external Disc Brakes ??

I'm not sure but I think all 126 had the car like disc brakes on the back wheels -- I can double check but in my minds eye I think I see the external discs on my tractor

Im thinking loose or broken fork holder in top of trans. Does the shifter feel funny? Like it moves in your hand but maybe not moving anything in trans?

In addition to Roland and Cooper's questions, I wonder if the engine is bogging down when you release the clutch? Also, are you grinding gears when shifting with the clutch pedal pressed down?
I would also look and see if the rear pin on back end of driveshaft is still intact.

ok, I stopped by the tractor in the dark with a flashlight and tried to contort myself to see the disc brakes while depressing the clutch/brake. I can't be 100% certain (dang bifocals) but I don't think the brake calipers were moving with the clutch ---so I am thinking they are stuck in a mostly closed position - which would explain why the person pushing me was able to get me moving and why each gear seems slower, because the brakes are slightly grabbing.
Are there any good videos or instructions on repairing these disc brakes ? I think I saw a video of brake repair on a 1450 - Roland do you know if that is the same brake design on the 126 ? even though those 2 tractors are probably 10 or 15 years apart in age Thanks Cooperino for the suggestion - but the tractor seems to go in gear well each time |

there were 2 or 3 times (not recently) when the gears would grind when I tried to change gears - and I remember being surprised because I knew the first part of the pedal depression was for the clutch and the bottom part for the break - so I remember thinking how can this be happening when the pedal is pressed so far down - But 80% of the time she shifts and goes into gear pretty nice |

Now that we have established you have Disc Brakes, then this is simple. Pressure is applied to the Pads via a "cam" that is being pulled by some linkage. That linkage is connected to the Pedal. I am thinking that something is rusted or froze up. Using some PB Blaster on the moving points will probably do wonders.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
