My 1864 is not firing. My daughter uses it in the summer to mow her lawn and the last time she used it smoke came from around the engine not from the exhaust. I brought it home to work on it and discovered the oil level sensor was leaking, am replacing it. Now it won't fire seems to be no spark at the plugs. There seems to be oil around the engine possibly from the leaky sensor. Could oil some how have coated something maybe the ignition modules or something else not allowing it to create a current to the plugs.

Look to see if the "kill wire" is grounded out !!

You have to sit on the seat for the engine to run or have the brake pedal locked down.

Thank you Mike, have known that for a long time.

Been a while but some oil sentries kill the magneto if the level is low.
others work on pressure, no pressure no spark. Follow your schematic to see what you have. I don't know what your system uses, but I'd first try removing the wire from the sensor/sentry and see if you then get spark, but best to consult schematic.

I doubt soaking coils in oil would make them stop firing.
As Roland said. Check to make sure the kill wire is not grounded. If possible pull the kill wire and try it. Should be yellow or white wire going into cover. Did you verify no spark? Could be no fuel. Before doing anything I would verify no spark by testing. Pull a wire and see if you have spark or not.

The oil pressure sensor is leaking oil and will replace it when part comes in. It has fired and run but it takes an extensive amount of cranking before it fires. Once this happens its will run however when I turn it off it is back to more long periods of cranking. I agree that the ignition modules should not be affected by leaking oil but I am puzzled by the lack of spark and then the engine finally firing and running.

Did you remove the wire from the oil safety that is leaking and what were
the results? Did you consult the schematic? We can't and will not do your testing for you. Sounds like it will not produce spark till the oil pressure comes up but I'm not familiar with it. Also you could have oil leaks from a worn seal, only you can see that. The cooling fins can be plugged with Debris from clippings or rodent nest material So count me out. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
