Default 149 rockshaft

Good Afternoon all,

Long time lurker, first post. Long story short, I’m doing a 149 restoration and had to cut the rockshaft out and didn’t think it would be so difficult to source one. I’m at the point of making one. I’ve got a 1” piece of cold rolled, my only problem is figuring out the exact dimensions of the 3 holes. It looks as if two are in plane and the other is slightly less than 90 degrees off. Due to the kerf of the blade from the cuts I’m also having issues figuring the distance between. I have rough estimates, but I’m too hesitant to start drilling at the moment.

Would anyone happen to have original drawings on the part? I’ve contacted Case/IH and they referred me to the Wisconsin Historical Society as supposedly they have shared the rights with them but I have yet to hear anything back.

I’ll clarify because some one is definitely going to ask. A previous owner at some point felt it necessary to weld the brackets to the shaft. Without a 360 drill motor there was no way I was going to grind those beads out.

First, welcome to OCC.....

It sounds like you need the following:

(1) IH-544195-R1 LH Arm
(1) IH-545627-R1 RH Arm

Both of these parts are NLA from Cub Cadet.

I did an internet & eBay search and found both. In addition, you could contact the sponsors at the top of the page (Cub Classics, Patton, & Houtz) to see if they have some in their inventory.

I checked with CC Specialties and they have both.

You should have NO problem finding these parts.

Finding a "print" to make you own will be impossible. You'll find "chicken teeth" before you find a print.

I have both oth the arms and was able to free them after I cut the shaft. The part I’m needing is IH-544194-R1, which is the actual shaft. The one on eBay I did manage to find seems like it is made for the manual lift and is advertised for a 1650 which has it has six 5/16 roll pin holes where as the one I am in need of has only three. Anyone know if this will fit? Says the same part number but is obviously different.

I’ll update with a picture soon.

The Rock Shaft is IH-544194-R1. I did find one on eBay. Again, I would check with the Sponsors also, as mentioned before.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
