I know some of this has been covered somewhat in other threads on this forum, but here goes.
I know the D600's used in the 1512, 782D, 882 and 1572 were sleeved while the D640's used in the 1772, 1782 and others were not sleeved. While I've owned my 1572 for about 33 years and used conventional antifreeze in it, since it is sleeved there should not be a cavitation problem. However, I've owned my 1772 since 2014 and it occurred to me, since this is not a sleeved engine, should I be using an antifreeze with nitrite to prevent cavitation problems? What do the rest of 640 diesel owners do?

I always use Colgate antifreeze in my air cooled engines since they are non sleeved and I never had a cavity

![]() Getting back on the topic, I googled up the antifreeze issue in question and it seems the issues of corrosion by cavitation are with wet sleeved engines. Since the engine isn't even sleeved, I'm assuming you are fine with the ""normal" antifreeze. Refer to the manual for coolant recommendation which you can find in the tech section here. Interesting topic!

The 1772 Owners Manual states a 50/50 mixture of Water/Ethylene Glycol.

Thanks for the info. I know the manual listed 50/50 mix of antifreeze, but does this diesel engine that is not sleeved BUT has coolant surrounding the cylinder bores have the same cavitation issues as a wet sleeved diesel engine does?

Well, you can purchase the Kubota D640 Service Manual to see what they recommend. I looked and could NOT find a free download. The recommendation I posted, was from the Cub Cadet 1772 Owner's Manual.

Roland, excellent thought! Believe it or not the same Kubota workshop manual used for the D600 also includes the D640. I went though the manual and they basically just say, use water and a scale inhibitor in warm weather, but drain that out and replace it with a permanent type antifreeze and clean water mix before freezing temps below 32 arrive to prevent freezing and cracked blocks. So, I think we are good to go based on the manual recommendations.

Good point! This will be the first on the to-do list when I dig out the 1772 in the spring.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
