An IH built 782 (S/N: <699,999) had a KT-17 Series I Engine in it from the Factory.

The Series II engine was not used until Chassis Serial 726125> which was built by CCC/MTD.

I had an early IH 682 with a series 1
It had a pipe plug instead of a cap for oil fill
It had a square air filter housing
However, the shortblock was replaced at sometime and all was placed on to the new series II. I didn't know until I noticed an oil filter provision on the side of the block.

This pic shows where the provision for an oil filter and oil pressure gauge/sensor would be on a series II.

WRONG. I have a Series II in my 784 and there is NO provision for an Oil Filter.

Some series 2's didn't have an oil filter, or even a provision for one as Roland said.
Now in da picture yall' will see a threaded plug with an arrow pointing to it.
(Don't worry the injins' are friendly in these parts)

Now pay attention, I'm only going to say this for the 100th ++ time.
If it is a threaded plug or a pressure switch or anything else threaded in there, it is it a series 2 or magnum.
If it is a series 1, the bossed area will have a small driven in cup plug in that place and the area will be smaller as there is no need for a robust boss as nothing is threaded into it.
Gospel.
The pipe plug for an oil fill, carburetors, air filters cooling tins, serial numbers etc are interchangeable between the engines so the presence or lack of those items don't mean shit.
A series 1 has no oil pressure spring/ball so it has about #5 on a good day
A series 2/magnum can run in excess of #80 cold.
I'll stop there as the internal differences are listed here many times by myself and others.

My IH 782 has a series II in it. It does not have an oil filter provision. It also has series I tins. The only way I knew for sure is OlGeorge said to use an oil pressure tester where the oil sensing using goes. I have a thread a few months ago with the same question and what all I did to ID it.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
