Wire wound resistors can be had with tolerances of 1%, 2%, and 5%. Wattage starts at 1W and can go to 500W. Wire is usually made of a high-resistivity alloy, such as nickel-chrome.

That resistor probably sets the voltage at which it quits charging, or limits the current.
I sure hope an exploded battery isn't your first hint that you should have bought a new regulator... You might be able to take the reg to a generator shop. If they say it can't be done, I'd believe them. Then again, they might be able to fix it right.

All carbon core resistors are color coded. I have seen many wire wound resistor with no color codes but with the actual rating stenciled on them. I would venture an educated guess, that Delco did NOT mark those resistors so they could end up selling you a new V/R when the resistor broke. Trade secret ya know....:biggrin2.gif:
