Default Trying to be excited about my new PTO but instead...boom...

So some of you may know, I had some issues with the PTO on my 2284 Super. Long story short, I ordered a new one, it arrived last night, and after work, I got it installed. Took the Cub for a few laps mowing the yard then pulled up to the garage to re-fuel (tractor and me ). When I pulled up, the Cub died on me. Hmm weird, but could be random...ok. I restarted it after a few more cranks than it should have taken but ok. Fueled it up, ran inside for a minute and when I came back out, it was off again. Tried to turn it over and you could hear the starter engage but not turn the tractor over. I checked the oil and the level/condition was good but I noticed something: it was hot! So hot, after I glanced at the level, I had to drop it because I nearly burnt my fingers. Not a good sign. I looked at the oil dipstick hole and there was smoke coming out of it. Again, not a good sign. I had suspicions at that point...I grabbed a socket and put it on the crank to see if I could turn the engine over...nothing.

So, I guess I have a seized engine which really, really pi$$es me off. I try to take care of my machines. I keep fresh oil and filters on the engines, I blow the engines out every time I mow, etc. And with less than 1000 hours, it dies on me.

Luckily, I have a line on a 2544 Cub Cadet for $200 I'll be nabbing this weekend with a 21hp Command in it I plan on swapping. But that doesn't mean I'm not very, super, really irked that my current engine crapped out on me. Thanks for the read guys, now off to a long day at work

Seems like your luck is about equivalent to mine half the time. Sorry to hear that your motor took a long vacation, but on the bright side you have a brand new PTO?

Had the same thing happen with my 784 with a KT-17 Series II. Was mowing lawn and all of a sudden oil was spraying in my face and all over the ground. The KT-17 kept running on one cylinder though. Bottom line...one connecting rod let go and put a hole in the block.

Do a little more checking before you give it up for "done blowed up" as they say in nascar.
It is possible the new PTO is amiss somehow???
oil/dipstick on an engine @ operating temp, is nothing you want to touch.

Agreed. I just had pto issues on my 1450, whole tractor started shaking, I slowed the engine down and it died, went to crank and it was locked up. Since you just worked on the pto, I'd at least pull it off and see if it spins.

I'm with George. It's worth a try removing the PTO first

If engine truly seized, that sucks big time. Congrats on the cheap 2544!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
