Default Problems with 2072

I have not cut grass with a gas tractor in years but last year I retired the 1572 so now I am using one of the 2072's. I could cut all my grass with less than a tank of fuel but the gasser needs more than a tank and I did not realize this so I ran it out of gas. Now it will run but when it gets under load the motor starts to run rough and spit and spudder and it will rev up and down up and down. If I stop and lessen the load it will even out. Not sure if it is dirt from running out of gas or something else. I did take the air cleaner off I had give it a little shot of starting fluid to get it running again after it ran out. The one thing I noticed was the PO had the linkage on the governor rigged with tie wire it looked like one end had broken off. I will order the linkage but any ideas.

Sounds like it was going lean under load. Can you pull the choke some Charles when it happens and see if it smooths out? Sounds like maybe some sediment in bottom of tank made its way into carb.

Alvy it seemed like sometimes the choke helped other times not.

I would take the carb off and give it a cleaning. Is it a fixed jet warbro?

What happened to the 1572?

What happened to the 1572?
I really don't know what the carb is other than it is what was stock. I found a few NOS parts for the 1572 and now I decided to retire it as to not mess them up.

Well things are getting worse all problems started when The tractor ran out of gas. I have swapped out the carburetor, gas filter and gas tank from another 2072 that was running fine. Now it will start and run for 2-3 seconds than die out only if choke is out. The only other thing I can change is fuel pump. I am going to bottle feed the carb and see what happens and maybe order a new fuel pump.

To check the fuel pump remove the fuel line from the carb and turn the engine over and check the amount of fuel the pump is putting out . It should be a large amount

Funny as it sounds, remove the gas cap, start it, and blow in the fuel tank
( pressurize)
that will tell you if it is a fuel pump, lung pressure is enough and will not hurt anything.
or you could remove the fuel line @ the carb and crank it over and see if it spurts fuel out of the line.

The problem might be a faulty anti-backfire solenoid. On my mag 20, it was on the carb right before the manifold. It's held in by a little flap of steel. There is one small black wire running to it. I took it out and cut off the plunger and my problems were over.
