Default Roaring and grinding sound

Good Morning all,

I have a 2003 model 1525. Started hearing bad sound coming from front under engine. Roars and grinds whether blades are engaged or not. Just guessing but maybe either the engine pulley or clutch. Both are original, never replaced. Is there a "shortcut" way of finding out which one it is rather than tearing it down to test both?

Sounds like the bearing in one of the idler pulleys has seen better days. Jack it up and get under it and start checking.

Well Sam, laid down today while engine running, took a good look-see and really the sound's coming from the engine pulley OR appears too. Less than a year ago, replaced everything on a new deck. If it is the engine pulley, gonna have to find someone to do the labor, just too old to do it myself.

You said it makes the noise if the PTO is on or off. My guess is that one of the 3 pulleys on the drive belt is toast. I circled the 3 in red for you.

OK, ordered all 3 pulleys + drive belt + deck belt. Have a very good friend who is a mechanic who is doing the labor. Question: How do you get the crankshaft pulley off the shaft? After tearing down, pulley is wobbley on the shaft. Is there a special tool for removing this pulley?

Doesn't your "mechanic" friend know??

If not, not much of a mechanic.....

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
