Default New to me 2082 needs TLC

Well guys, I took a plunge and picked up my 2nd Cub today. I lost the Hydro on my Bolens HT20, I know it's a bad word, last summer and need time to fix it. So I found this SGT and felt it was a decent deal!

She's not pretty but runs pretty well. The plastics are a bit more beat up than they were described but with a little Plastifix i think thry can be saved. She does have the Haban 60" deck on her but Its missing one of the whole front caster assemblies. Although I did just order a used one and a whole set of new wheels to outfit the deck with.

Also it's has some engine baffles/heat shields that need a little tack welding.

As said before, the plastic is pretty beat up too. The PO definitely must of accidentally ran into something and the front grill is all cracked and has broken pieces. I've been looking into plastifix and maybe I can try and fix some of it.

The rear end has no leakage, except from the left wheel hub, all the bolts in the rear are tight and unbroken. No smoke from the engine, no unusual sounds from it either!

The deck is a bit noisy and hopefully some grease, and new bearings for now, will help. So we'll see where we go from here.

Any advice you avid collectors and restoration pioneers can give would greatly be appreciated! I'm not planning a full restore right now I'm just wanting a solid machine.

Anyone have a source for the NLA rotor and brake pads for this?

Welcome to OCC and congrats on your SGT! Haban decks are awesome. With a little care it will do just fine.

One of our moderators, Sam Mac, put together this info on the "Cyclops" series tractors.

The SGT'S are my favorite. Enjoy your tractor!

Looks like the rear deck wheel is aftermarket also.... and missing the RH belt guard.... Few of the guys on here may have the needed parts to get it up to speed...

As stated before.... Sam in the SME on Cyclops here...

I actually have the belt guard. Don't have the bolt for it so it's not mounted. I will be replacing the rear deck wheels as well. Thank you!

I do not know your abilities or tools but if I wanted to use that to mow, I'd start with removing the deck. Go thru the spindles and remove old grease and inspect also the mule drive and check the pulleys. Then with it off it will be much easier to address the tractor issues.
Front axles and steering items are often neglected. Remove the engine, clean out behind the shrouds and straighten them if needed. While engine is out, remove drive shaft and inspect.
There, that will keep you busy for a bit.

Edit: Also remove the rear fender pan and clean out the tank and run new fuel lines and filters.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! I have everything at my disposal except a lath and a welder but I have friends that have those. I had both my hydraulic cylinders rebuilt on my bolens for about $150 each. That was new push rods and guts inside.

Side note, I have the bearings for the spindles coming in on monday. One thing I've noticed on this deck is it sounds like a helicopter. Once the PTO is engaged I notice the tensioner moving a lot, giving me that helicopter sound. However, when I push/pull on the V-belt while everything is off I can barely get the tensioner to move, that big spring is compressed about 4" on the rod. Is this a normal sound or probably because I'm needin to install the new spindle bearings?

I also got in a new set of wheels for the deck! Wasn't to bad, $70 on evilbay for all 4 wheels. The only issue I had, and knew I was going to have, was the bolt holes were 5/8" instead of the needed 1/2" on all four wheels. Nothing a few bronze sleeve bearings didn't fix!

When you pull the deck, you may find the tensioner spring is broken, both of my 60" had that problem. Going by memory its a pretty simple setup, uses a heavy reinforcing plate bolted to the deck. I would pull that plate and clean under it while it was off and spray some paint on it. I don't consider either of my 60" decks very loud. One of them has never had the bearings replaced and the other ????? Good call on the wheel bushings. Those decks are designed to be dropped on the wheels completely. Unfortunately Cadet/Haban did a pitiful job of engineering heavy enough wheels, pins etc. I had to make new pins for the one on my 2072, I actually hardened them. Also installed grease fittings as well. Check everything about your mule drive as well--lots of wear from those oversize decks---another area that should have been engineered a little better. Check all the welds on the deck while you are at it, don't be surprised if you find a couple cracks. I'm certainly not knocking these decks, we love both the ones here.

John,

Thanks for the insight. I have only found one crack in it thus far and it appears to be just on the metal tubing that holds the front caster. Just a tiny crack in one of the welds.

I've spun the belt on my own thinking maybe I have a bent spindle and that's what is making the loud helicopter sound but I can't seem to see anyou bends. Time will tell when I tear it apart for new bearings. This is going to be my grass killer this year so I doubt I'll have the time for a full tear-apart at this moment.

There's a little wear on the deck hanger, specifically the frint but it's actually pretty minimal. The PO said he always ran it on the wheels unless he was in some really thick grass.

Sam,

I actually ran across those yesterday while doing a forum search. Very detailed! I will be adding the braces to the back lift hangers on the deck. I do have one bent forward about an inch. I had almost the exact same symptoms on my large frame bolens with the 54" deck. I still think it's heavier than the 60" haban.

Thank you both for the info.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
