Ah, thanks. I figured as much. Bit of an odd site, though it has a lot of info I couldn't find elsewhere.

Some of his info is outdated from what I've heard. He is of questionable character.

So what kind of clearances do you have on the valves at TDC?

they seem to be pretty much spot-on where they should be, .008 and .018 for intake/exhaust. I do notice a "catch" as I slide the feeler through the intake side though, like there's a high spot in there. Not sure what to do with that, if anything. Its possible that high spot is keeping the valve more closed than it should be? The adjuster seems quite tight and I'm reluctant to overpower it. Wondering if I should adjust for the high spot or try to knock it down somehow.

It didn't seem abnormally cruddy nor did I notice anything that might cause sticking around the valve seats themselves, though I have limited experience with which to judge "normal".

Could be an optical illusion to me but doesn't the exhaust valve spring (on the left) look like it's broken? might just be deposits

With the intake valve up what does the valve seat and valve sealing area look like? Pitted or scored up real bad? If so time to tear it down and rebuild.

It didnt look bad to my eye. Here's a pic after I cleaned it up a little. Hard to see the sealing surface of the valve real good but it feels pretty smooth.

Looks like it has seen better days to me. It's hard to tell from the pics but it looks like there is a few divots around the sealing area. I'm not seeing the sealing ring around the valve seat. I just rebuilt a k301 last year for a friend of mine and it looked the same way. Same symptoms as you are having. I would say a rebuild is in the near future.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
