Good morning,
I have my 1450 apart due to some vibration issues. While I have the engine out would it be worth replacing the oil pan gasket as preventive maintenance? It's not leaking or anything but it's 40 years old. I have a tube of Permatex® High-Temp Red RTV Silicone Gasket Maker, can this be used instead of a pre-cut gasket or is it not suitable/recommended for this application? The gasket is cheap, but I'd have to wait for it to ship. |

Nope. If it isn't leaking leave it alone. Don't open it. If you replace it, it may leak. Don't ever tear into something just because it seems old. Old is irrelevant, leaks are real.

Good advice. And no, I don't think the permatex would be a suitable replacement for the gasket. Maybe a thin coat on each side of the gasket (very thin) but not as a substitute.

Would be more important to inspect the motor mount holes for stripped threads if you have an aluminum pan.
Make sure the threads are good and the hole is clean clear to the bottom. Then be sure, if you replace any bolts, NOT to get ones that are too long. And do not over tighten them upon reassembly. Many folks have this problem and replace them with a cast iron pan. I have done three of my QL's that way. |

Do the cradle mod too.

Wouldn't I have to take the oil pan off to do that?

No.... Not if you own a tape measure.
Or, just drain the oil out of the engine before you remove it. You can lay it on it's side with no oil in it if you must have the cradle bolted to the motor for fitment. I guess I'm different. I would just go grab one of the 15 or so oil pans I have laying around. ![]() |

Now if I bolt it to the engine and start welding, it shouldn't affect the coil or other electronics as long as the ground is nearby on the rail right? I guess I could just tack it in place while bolted, take it off and do the bulk of the welding off the engine. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
