1/2" NPT is the next size pipe...
BUT! Might be able to get a flange style plug with an o-ring that self taps at a parts store (in a slightly oversize). That's what I would do. Got nothing to lose if you make it worse. |

Just an idea...
The hole is currently .650". Drill size for 1/2" NPT is 23/32" (.718"). If you're bent on saving that oil pan, I'd ream the hole out to 23/32" and tap for a 1/2" NPT plug. My .02 |

A pipe plug will leak in the aluminum pan. Well if you Teflon tape the crap out of it, or use a sealer it likely wouldn't, but hard to get it very tight as it will crack the pan. That's why they came with a flange seal style. Stick with the flange seal type.

Your screwed. Time to get the wallet out and be prepared to spend some $$$. Remove the engine, remove the pan, buy a cast iron pan and be done with problem. Sorry but it is what it is.

I agree get rid of the aluminum pan . none of mine that are runners have aluminum pans cause the mounting bolt holes got stripped out and the motors were flopping around

I bought another oil pan but figured I'd try and retap it just to see if it works since I can get taps very cheap and if it doesn't work then oh well and replace the pan.

FWIW the aluminum blocks on the KT's & mag and I'm sure others, do use a tapered pipe thread. Yes over time, they do get larger after repeated use. I put a 1/2" pipe plug in a mag block because someone cross threaded the 3/8" original. It does have enough boss to accommodate the larger diameter plug. Yes we read your posts, thank you for taking the time to help so many ppl over the years. We learn something new every day. Sadly we take most of it to the grave. @ my age I'm glad what I/we post here will hang around a while in a searchable database. As a younger man, I wished I had that ability. I would suggest to the original poster, that he go to an auto parts supplier and search the dorman or "help" section for an oversized, self tapping oil drain plug. They are a washered plug not a tapered pipe plug, Ideal for that aluminum pan. As John posted previous. As John and others know, they do make them, I have a few in my parts bins Oh and do make sure it is started straight or it will not seal properly!!!! |

I'm just going to replace the pan instead of wasting time messing with it. Thanks everyone for your help and advice
