What's wrong with the center pulley?, looks fine to me. If it's 4 1/4" than you will need a 78" belt. You sure that J bolt isn't causing the belt to rub on the mule drive? You gonna sharpen those blades?

Looks to me like you need to clean the grass and junk out of the engine compartment.
Secondly, also looks like the spring loaded idler is stuck. That thing should be up against the back of the mule with no belt tension on it. The pulley on the right (in the pic) should be free from the one on the left, and it's waaaaaayyy to far back. The "J" bolt isn't even hooked to it. It should be directly below the PTO pulley. Center pulley on the deck is fine. I'd say the reason you keep smoking belts is the fact you have no spring tension. That pulley on the left of the pic should spring forward HARD when no belt is on it. Do all the pulleys spin? Does the deck turn freely? Everything on that machine looks like it hasn't been used in 10 years. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
