Not really. And $12 isn't expensive. Price the cam follower and you'll see what a slightly expensive part is. You won't need to do it again for 30 years, and the best part of all is, you can still get the part.

Question: where can I get them for $12?

I checked one of the site's sponsors, who sells them for $40, and nearly fainted!

The last one I bought from my local Cub Cadet dealer was $11 and some change.

Grant,

I believe there were two manufacturers of the steering column. So depending upon the one you have the cover with foam seal can be $42 (left photo) or $11 (right photo). I think the $11 part is more common.

Well, that would explain it! I haven't taken mine out; I sure hope it's the $11 model!

IH only used the Ross Steering Column. The Retainer and Gasket on the RH picture above is the correct parts.

If I'm not mistaken the one on the left is only for Originals none of the other models used that seal and it will not fit in anything other than an Original column. AND IH also sells the one on the right as a replacement for the one on the left, oddly enough the one on the right does fit in an Original column.

I have the engine out of my 1650 right now to replace a seal, and I'm thinking about doing the steering rebuild, too. I have a great hardware store in my area where I can get the NICE 605 bearing as well as the shim washer and nut. My only problem is I don't have any specs on the shim washer. Can any of you guys tell me the size and thickness of what I need to get? I assume the nut is just a 15/16 nylock?

I think you can use the one you have.

Ahh, I missed that! Thank you. I was initially confused by your quote from Matt G., because my name is Matt G. as well! I was thinking to myself, "I didn't type that. I know I didn't type that!!" It was the other Matt G!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
