Yesterday my brother told me about seeing a line of Cub Cadets, so off we go to look at them. The guy had 5 tractors lined up, a Sears Suburban, a Bolens 1050 and three Cubs. One was a 104 (I already have two of those), a 108 and what I believe is a 102. All are rough cosmetically and not too original. The 104 has the right deck, the 108 looks the best, but has an off-brand deck and dry rotted front tires, the 102 has a true IH front snow blade, but a cobbled up lift rod with a huge helper spring that looks like it will be murder on one's right leg. That 102 also had a butchered frame, someone cut a big hole where the creeper gear lever would be and then another notch where the points cover is. All 3 are non-running.
I might have been interested in the lot if the price was right, but I'm trying to convince the wife on a running 147 in Indiana. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
