The 1450 has been sitting for a while and since it was a nice day I decided to do some mowing in the orchard. Had to charge the battery to get it to start. Got that done and went on to mow some rushes in a small pasture. Just as I finished the engine sputtered and died. When I tried to start it the starter would not engage. So to get it back to the shop I fired up the Farmall A, hooked up the tilt trailer, and retrieved the 1450. This happened yesterday.
Now today I checked the battery and it was good. The starter would spin, but still wouldn't engage. I tapped lightly on it with a hammer and it now the starter works. Now that it turns over I was able to check for spark. I got nothing. I then gave the points a quick dressing and still no spark. I guess I need to check out the condenser and coil next.

My 1450 did this awhile back it turned out the connector on the key switch was bad. I had 2.5 volts making it to the coil. I ended up getting a new connector and terminals from john deere.

I checked voltage to my coil and it was battery voltage. Then checked at the points and got nothing opened or closed. Swapped a coil from a John Deere 214 and we are up and running.

Got the voltmeter out and checked the coil. It was open on the - side to plug wire and between the +/- terminals. The + side to plug wire read 8.13k ohms. Looks like an open coil was the problem.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
