Hey guys,
I'm installing a new driveshaft fan on my 169, but I don't know what way it goes on, maybe someone on here knows, there was no old fan, it was completely missing, I'll get a pic of the fan soon because both sides of it are different, and I want to make sure it turns the correct way, thanks. |

The fan has to blow air back to the Hydro Unit.

From the limited view of your picture, I can not tell which way the fan is blowing.

I installed it the exact way the service manual said to, with the snap ring facing towards the engine.

Well I just noticed the 169s new hydro cooling fan I installed is destroyed, I don't know how it came loose and moved, and the rag joint is ripped, it was an nos one I think, I guess it was dry rotted, I have another one of those, but need another new fan now, anyone know of a metal one?

The Narrow Frames had a metal fan, I know the shafts are the same diameter, but I've never tried to put one on a Wide Frame.
Hard to tell from your picture but FWIW, the original snap rings were much thicker and probably a considerable amount stronger than the average hardware store snap rings. Mcmaster Carr has them.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
