I used an electric fence to allow my cattle to mow/feed my grass for years, sure miss them since I downsized.
I never realised how much 4 acres takes to mow. -----and no home raised stakes to grill

I vote for none, let him figure out which machine to buy on his own, be it a Home Depot machine, Lowes or a used one. Offer suggestions, but that's it.
He's 28, well past the age of the need to be given stuff. He has a new 3 acre lot, let him figure it out. If he has no idea what to do with a 3 acre lot, then.... I'm old school. |

Get him a tow hitch and a pull behind mower for his Prius.

Well, I may be the first and only one, but I feel like I have the better reason....so my vote is the 650 JD. Since it is his first time, if he tears it up then it isn't as tragic since its a John Deere. Kind of like a teenager who is first learning to drive should not start with a new car.

I think it's great that you are helping him out. I would let him start off on the smallest of them, he will/should be grateful either way. Don't want to spoil him too much...

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
