Maybe the incorrect filter caused the problem........

I've left them sit for a couple of days before even. I put the fluid in and wait for a couple of hrs before I start it, thinking gravity will take a little while to push the fluid thru the filter. I don't know why the loosening of the filter helped though.

Took a look at the suction lines for the 1440. The early 1440 looks like it has a hose from the filter up to the charge pump, the later machine have a steel line. I'm wondering if this is an early machine maybe the hose collapsed? Or if it just got air bound like some of the older Sundstrand's tend to do with the suction line that loops up over the top of the pump. Oil should have poured out no matter when the filter was loosened up because the filter is well below the oil level. I recall another wont prime issue a while back that turned out to be part of a paper towel blocking the suction line after the owner cleaned the case.

I'm not sure either but it worked. With both the Purolator filter and the Napa filter the tractor ran for about 10 minutes each and nothing was happening but as soon as we ran it with the filter loose it started to work, I almost got ran over while tightening the filter down. I've used the Purolator filter many times without issue so I'm no convinced it was the problem since the Napa filter did the same, I guess this new to us tractor just wanted to give me a hard time.

I'm glad it's working but it bugs me that I don't know what caused the problem.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
