Well I finally got my 3240 back together. I'm very please with the result. I'm sure as mowing season gets into full swing that I may have to tweak things a bit but here are the results of my project.

I decided to add a shift handle. I was able to attach the handle to the shaft assembly by using 2, 3/4" split collars. I welded the handle to the split collars. I made the handle from an old drive shaft from an 1811.

The foot pedals still can be used and move as I shift the handle.

I did remove the spring from the neutral return link so the handle wont always spring back to neutral. This might become an issue in the future as I begin mowing but we'll see.

I have changed my mind about this mower and have since realized how well built it really is....except for the lock differential parts that break easily within the rear end. It is a very heavy duty garden tractor. I will be adding accessories to it as time goes by. I would love to add a 3 pt. hitch with hydraulic lift for a small grader box so I can keep my 1000 ft. driveway groomed.

I found a used 60" mower for it and am in the process of rebuilding it. I mow about 10 acres so the 60" will be a time saver!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
