I got her running last night. I had a whine in the hydro. I checked the oil level this morning and added 2 qts of type F ATF, (PO told me that was what was in her). I still have the whine. Is this normal with a hydro? I've only had gear drives for the last 8 yrs or so.
Also, the handle that controls the front hydraulic ports won't stay centered. (If you remember, my hydraulics aren't working, the pins(?) in the valve box are stuck). Could this be the problem with the front port control lever, no pressure to keep it centered? Thanks |

CDL: Why don't you try using Hy-Tran (or Cub Cadet equivalent) which is what is supposed to be in there. Drain that alien stuff and do it right!! Don't forget to also put on a NEW Cub Cadet hydrostatic Filter!!

Just beware that using fluids that are not spec'ed for that rear end could cause severe damage. The seals inside might not be meant for ATF and might begin to break down and fail.

That's PSG, (Armor), to you Sgt Major. (Small world, we're from New Caney,Tx orginally). Thanks for the advise folks. I only put the ATF in because that's what the PO said was in it. Tractor has remained in neutral. As the tractor sat for 1 year, I had changed the engine oil, spark plug to Autolite 216 and installed one of Dave Kirk's magnetic drain plugs. I intended to service the Hydro after I got her up and running. The whine worried me, thinking I might have to rebuild/ replace it.
I got the hydraulic controls freed up and working correctly. The front port handle was rotating around the lever to the control box. I cleaned the tube and arm as best I could, sprayed with starting fluid, let dry, then applied J&B around it as best I could, hopefully it'll work! |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
