The only machine I had for reference is now at my bro's in DC, so I don't have one to look at anymore. ![]() I bet that they aren't supposed to move. The "glue" has probably deteriorated. |

Being the new owner of this well abused machine, it's no wonder I'm finding parts missing. The fan shroud is MIA along with the air baffle. Does everyone else have a fan shroud? And how about that air baffle? I'll look on the frame to see where these were originally attached. I saw the fan shroud on the exploded parts diagram but as of late I haven't heard anyone here mention anything except a plastic fan on these driveshafts, so the metal one is news to me. The replacement part (IH-394065-R1) is shown as a plastic fan with snap ring, no mention of a metal fan. The metal fan I have has a hub with two set screws. Where the fan blade is crimped onto the hub there is what appears to be a friction material on either side of the blade so the blade will turn in the hub (with pressure applied). If something really solid got in the way of the spinning blade it might help save the blades somewhat. Fingers would still come out bloody but a 1/2" tree branch might do no damage on a quick hit.
Thanks everyone, for all the good info! |

The later machines didn't have and air baffle or a fan shroud. I think the shroud disappeared with the metal fan. Unless your going for "original" I wouldn't worry about it.
Knowing how other things that turn at high rates of speed are mounted, I'm going to say that the rubber is for vibration. Not a clutch, or "safety" thing. And if a stick did actually get in that fan..... it would be bad. Plastic fan will flex to some degree. A metal one is either going to break, or chew the crap out of it. I will say..... we don't hear of the metal ones breaking very often.... but all of us have seen plastic ones with no blades anymore. ![]() |

Here is a pic of one of those metal fans, pardon the dirt, plastic ones are replacements on all NF,WF came with plastic from the factory. The shroud connects to the underside of the tunnel and it is held on by 4 screws.Be sure # 11 is installed.

[QUOTE=tobo127;308931]Ford4150, which manual did that come from? I think that is what I saw recently.
If I can see it clearly enough, the dimension is 1 1/8" hub to flange? Came from service manual page 2-39B. I have it on download, but I think it's in the tech library. Yes, 1-1/8" |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
