Hi guys,
Im getting ready to start putting back together an m18 and the only part i simply cant find is 52 237 02-S number 48 in the attach parts diagram. Its a thin piece of spring steel and it holds the oil pickup in place. Any ideas on how to work around this? Do any of you have that part laying around? |

The parts diagram calls it a clamp. When the oil tube and the box with the screen is installed in the block, that little piece of steel is flexed and jammed in there to put pressure down on the screen/box to hold it in place. When I opened the engine up, it was snapped and the screen/box was loose from the tube.

I went out and looked at one of the many that I have apart. I just didn't remember that little clamp/spring.... (whatever). Like I said, it is NLA, so my suggestion is make something out of a thin piece of metal. That, or screw that pick-up in so it can't move around. Here's yet another reason not to try and work on these motors (M's). Just can't get parts for them.

Try a hardware store to see if they have spring steel. You might try a piece of steel banding material if it's springy enough. Also there are many people on ebay who have parted out M18's. You might contact these people to see if they have the part. In the attached photo, you can barely see the part to the upper right of the pickup. This shows you how it is placed in the engine. I know it's not the most informative photo, but make sure you pin the governor shaft in place or you may end up with the mess I had to deal with in the photo. |

Maybe the newer oil pick-up tube kit does away with that part. 82 755 29-S Replaces 52 095 03.

Bingo!!
That is what I remember using to replace it several years ago. I just couldn't remember in the earlier post but remembered it was eliminated. A lot less expensive and it uses no retainer. You can go to that or make a spring steel retainer for the original set up. Just make sure you flush all the oil passages and follow the book on the placement of the crank case sealer around a few critical areas and don't use too much. I like Yamabond over silly cone,-- Hondabond works well also. A little is always better than a lot. |

If the newer pickup tube doesn't work, you can get the spring steel from McMaster Carr. You just have to know the thickness and width that it needs to be and order whatever is closest.
