update time... started pulling the engine panels off before i attempt to start it. i filled a grocery bag with the mouse nest i took out of the flywheel and muffler housings. very little rust. everything looks good now. hooked a battery up to it and turned the key to on. no smoke, and the hour meter turns. is the white arm supposed to move the whole time the battery is hooked up, regardless of key position? turned the key to get a no fuel crank to see how the ignition system works and BANG!!! sounded like someone hit the side of the block with a hammer. i thought the worst until i looked into it further. the starter magnets are loose of the housing and broke. so the starter would start to turn and jam the stater into the rotor. fun fun. its two big pieces so im going to see if i can epoxy the pieces back into place, i dont want to buy a $65 dollar starter to see if the engines any good.

The white hand is the second hand like a clock, so yes it'll always move

ok good, because it moves the whole time the battery is connected, even if the key is out.

It should only finish its cycle and quit moving in a few seconds.

some success today, got the magnet epoxied back in place, and it turns the engine over. never done that before, but if it gets me closer to show time without spending money im happy.

big update tonight fellas! ill start from the beginning... when i got the tractor the PO which was also the original owner said that it developed a "violent rod knock" and major hard starting back in 1994. in 1999 the knock was so bad that he parked the tractor at the edge of the swamp and never looked back. fast forward 15 years i was the first to ask about it, so i was the winner and got to drag it home. i did little petty stuff with it here and there, but it mostly took up space on my trailer. tonight i decided to roll it into the shop to make or break its future. so remember, this a 39 year old tractor left untouched for a decade and a half to rot away in the swamp over a dead engine. tonight was an ok night. figured first i would deal with the loose engine. everyone says the rubber mounts give out and makes a loose engine. so i looked underneath. well ill be, all the rubber mounts are there and boy, they look good. engine still rocks like a drunken college kid. i looked some more, and ALL 4 engine mounting bolts were GONE! luckily i had 4 bolts that matched in my bolt bin. next problem. no spark, 12 volts into the coil, 12 volts out, still no spark. little sand paper later and we have a little blue lightning storm as my daughter calls it. cool, repaired starter, mounted engine, ignition, compression, next we need fuel. poured some in the tank, discovered it has a fuel shut off, turn the key and.... nothing, just cranks. damnation's. fiddle with the choke, fiddle with the points, fiddle with the plug, fiddle with the radio. try the key again... purrs like a kitten with a hair ball, but shes alive!!! a little smoke later and some sea foam and the hair ball is gone. man does this thing run nice! dosnt skip a beat, NO KNOCKS!!! what the PO was calling a developing knock becoming a violent knock was the engine coming unbolted from the cradle! i havent tried the hydro yet, i wasnt in the position to pull it off the trailer, but to bring the swamp thing back to life was good enough for tonight for sure! sorry for the long post, but i wanted you guys to live the moment with me.

You'd think you'd notice the engine dancing around independent of the rest of the machine....
great that it's running again.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
