I just picked up this Cub Cadet Original. My first Cub and have always wanted one. I found the S/N and the 1st # are 174 last two have to much paint. Tell me its is 1961. Little paint remover and get the other 2. The tractor runs and starts fine 7HP. K161. No oil leaks and no smoke. I was happy. Clutch is smooth and free also brakes very good. Those are a plus to start. That tractor has been redone at some point in its time. Had a mower on it but was gone when I bought the tractor.
I have noted a few things and have posted some photos. Any comments and help would be greatly appreciated. This site is a wealth of info. The front spindles are not collar type. Change or upgrade? The choke did not work. Thought the cable was frozen. Got that freed up and as you can see and my research on this site the choke shaft is not correct I think. Seems like the carb was changed at some point. Haven't pulled it to so if it a Cater 20. Slight drip from input shaft on transmission. Trans oil is really clean. My winter project. Needs tie rod ends and steering adjustment but all and all not heap of rust. Thank you all, John |

Nice find. I don't know as much as a bunch of people on here but do I see a thin axle, early dash tower, early rear wheels and no creeper hole in the frame?

Welcome to the site. Your "0" is certainly a 1961 Looks like Oct or Nov 61 unless there is a third number hidden.

Just noticed it has the drain hole in the seat. Yoda any idea when that started serial wise or is it a replacement I wonder? Very nice tractor indeed, my 4 digit has all the early tell take stuff except the thin axle, no collars.

I will work to try and carefully get some paint off after the 172. That # is certain shows pretty well. The next may be 0.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
