Others interpreted your "noise" description as a "knock". I will interpret it as a blown head gasket. I have spent quite a bit of time riding on the rear fender of a Cyclops to keep it from tipping/spinning, running along the side of a hill and I've never had any problem with starving the M 18, CH 18 or Vanguard 16 for oil. That's not to say you can't. |

I have had to replace that seal more than once. I don't know if it's a heat issue or a sudden jolt or what but they don't seem to last. Last time I replaced it with a SKF 13734 and I have had no problems. I don't think the seal Kohler provides is good and may be why so many KT and Mag twins blow.

You know, the blown headgasket might be something. I noticed when I pulled the exhaust & pto off that the left bank was white in the ex manifold. The front crank seal was definitely the oil leak, I was able to move it around and spin it by hand. Ended up fishing it out with a small pick tool. Fortunately my Cub dealer had a seal in stock. Anyhow I nailed it together, made sure oil was full and fired it up. Doesn't seem as loud today. I think I'm going to pull the tin off the left head though. Thanks for the ideas everyone. I really enjoy this forum.

Another option, or in addition to a gauge, might be an idiot light. I mow ditches also and I'm usually leaning uphill out of the gauge sight line.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
