Default Hurt my 1861 (Magnum 18 help)

Well, took my 1861 out after work this afternoon to mow the ditches out by the family farm, checked oil beforehand like normal (was full) , anyway ran good for a little over an hour, Dad walked out to talk to me so I cut off the mower and idled it down, had an odd muffled sound kind of like an exhaust leak. Anyway ran it up by his house and had it idling & noticed dripping oil in the front of the tractor. Shut it down & checked & still had oil at low part of the safe range on the dipstick. Anyway I cruised it home & blew all the grass off from mowing today and popped the grill out and I think the front seal is bad, as I have oil slung around the inside of the exhaust tinwork in line with the PTO. Anyway I'm kind of wondering if it could have pushed the seal out and its contacting the PTO and making the odd noise? Or how likely is it that it could have damaged a rod? I'm praying that its not that bad but I'm worried. It's a tough sound to describe, just doesn't seem to have as hard of a 'hit' as when a rod bearing goes out on an automotive engine.

Yeah, I know, it's hot now & I have plans this evening but tomorrow I'll take the 782 & finish the ditches & then tear into it. I was just kind of fishing for other members experiences or ideas.

Had the same thing happen to me. It was the seal behind the pto. Be careful the seal can be pushed into the crank case. May be a devil to get back out.
Has anybody found a replacement seal with a shoulder to keep it from going into the crank case?

If you fill it back up with oil, does it still knock?

It does still have the noise, I topped it off when I got home (it wasn't run low, but on the low side of the crosshatch of the stick). Some of the angles of the ditch are kind of steep and I mow them parallel to the road. Praying that I don't have any mechanical damage.....

I'm thinking ditch mowin could be hard on these engines if it was low on oil and the pump pick-up was on the high side. See if you can put an oil pressure gauge on it so it wont happed again. I hope its okay.

if the seal sucked into the crankcase it will make a sucking sound that you'd be able to hear at idle speed,make sure you put the new seal in just past flush [recessed] about 1/8" into the block so the tabs on the field assy. fit into the block

I keep all my tractors topped up with oil. Oil is the lifeblood of any engine and many have only 1 1/2 quarts capacity. The loss of only a pint or more is a quite significant percentage of the capacity. I had to replace the front seal on my command engine and the old one was quite loose and would slide back and forth. The new seal fit tight and for my engine if I recall correctly it was to be fit flush.

No. There is no such seal. See the last quote below for the reason.

If it has a knock, it has damage. Mechanical damage that creates a knock, doesn't go away. It just gets worse. Better to find out and fix what it is before you have a block with an unwanted window in it.

I'm not sure about the sucking sound thing. Never heard one do that.... ever.
But you are correct about the seal not being flush because of the field coil.
