Default Kt17 for 782

Picked up a cheap wheel horse with at kt17 series II in it with the plan of putting the engine into a rolling 782 I have. With a little work the engine was running ok. Compression a little low, 90's on one side, 100 on other side. There were some strange starting issues but I thought it might be the old battery that came in the tractor. Was cleaning the engine yesterday in preparation on the transplant and found pieces of magnets by the flywheel. After removing the flywheel I found only a half of one magnet. With pieces everywhere. Needłess to say stator is also a problem.

Pulled the heads and besides lots of carbon things look pretty good. One piston had a little pitting but cylinder walls look good.

While I can find the flywheel and stator used I am trying to figure when to cut my loses.

Anything else I should look at before moving forward and buying parts? Would it make sense to pull the jugs and have them measured?

I guess I was looking for any ideas of additional things to check on the engine before I sink another bunch of $$ into it.

If you've got compression down around 90lbs in one cylinder, you might want to think twice about doing a swap with that engine. The KT's and Mag's are big $$$$ to rebuild/overhaul and the manual says anything below 90lbs is rebuild time. It sounds like it's getting tired so you many not get much life out of it, and it has for sure seen better days.

If, however, you are set on transplanting it, there are things you need to check since it is front a different brand tractor. Check your engine mounting holes, they are most likely different, or at least the mounting plate is different. The big one, however, is to check your shaft diameter for PTO and how the driveline is going to hook up. Did that Wheel Horse use shaft drive? Was it belt drive with a pulley system? There's a lot of good reasons not to try to transplant motors between brands of machines unless you know what you're getting in for. Best case scenario, you're able to get a new stator, get the mounting plate situation figured out, rig a muffler that works on it (it may have a muffler that won't fit), and any other little oddities that come up (wiring, fuel, etc) and you don't totally break the bank to get it going. I'm not trying to be negative, btw; just don't want you getting into something you didn't realize. But if you do go forward with it, we're all here to help

Thanks Jim,

Here is what I found out so far.

1. Mounting bolt pattern the same.
2. Already put 782 muffler onto motor.
3. Wiring the same.
4. Already have driveshaft cup mount if I use 782 flywheel
5. Pto shaft same diameter just little longer.
6. Motor tin shield slightly different but can purchase tin or build.

Motor items i need to do:
1. Flywheel
2. Stator
3. Clean carbon
4. Replace Head gaskets
5. Sparkplugs and wires
6. Light lapping on valves to improve seating.
7. Better evaluation of piston and ring condition.
