I went out to the local IH dealer and talked to some of the mechanics I know there. We tested my regulator and stator and compared them to new off the shelf items. They tested identical.
I had previously looked for short circuits in the stator wiring, which is what I was SURE the problem was and hadn't found any. We were all stumped. They asked me how big of a fuse I was using. I said 10 amp. That is what the wiring diagram I had showed. They said I should be using 15 amp on the run circuit and 10 on the lights. Actually one person there said they were running a 20 amp in theirs. I switched to a 15 amp fuse and all is well. Runs fine no blown fuses and charging system is working fine. congrats - you're lucky you didn't have to dig that stator out. Whereabouts in KS are you?

Welcome. I make it to Topeka twice a year to see the daughter and family. They live on NE 62nd st. If you are near there I may want to look you up. We go there in Apr (turkey Season) and Sept for muzzeloader deer season.
