Chris, Nice pictures. Looks like a good goal to go for, a nicely restored, fully functional 800!

Thanks Lew, I will certainly keep at it when the weather warms up...

Well, a little progress on the 800 tonight. Yesterday I took the tractor into where I work and had our mechanic cut off the old lift handle mounting bracket. I tried and tried to pound the spirol pin out, but it never did come out so I had to cut all of it off to bare shaft. Finally got that off, so I had a nice new lift handle ready to install tonight. It works great and is now ready for the 38 inch deck. Also had to sadly "modify" the side panes for the big starter. I had to roll back part of the lip that sits inside of the frame so it would clear the starter. The frame is already notched by a PO for the starter, and my dreams of finding the smaller starter have disappeared. Since the frame is notched it will never be a 100 pointer, but I'm ok with that The mechanical work is 95 percent done, just some wiring for the lights and making some muffler brackets and finding an 8hp head shroud in the parts pile. I was also happy to find that a 7hp air cleaner from a 70, 71, etc will fit perfectly inside of the sideshields (since I also dont have the original air cleaner either). The only 800 specific part is the muffler, which is in awesome shape.

Well guys, the 800 has a problem now that I need some help figuring out. I installed a mower deck last night, and mowed for about 15 minutes with it before the electric clutch went out. As it looks right now there is no direct replacement for this since the clutch is 800 specific. The field coil is shot on mine. How would one go about fixing this? I have a Quietline clutch on the bench, could I take the field coil off it and install it on the 800 mounting plate?

Hmm, does coil appear to be the same size and mounting? Ohm reading the same? It's worth a shot because of the price of an assembly is crazy but it's NLA too. Maybe an 800 goo hoo would know more.
Just looked at other QL clutches, 2 different types, Ogura and Warner, neither have assembly or coil numbers that are the same as 800s. Yikes

They make a thousand different PTO clutches. There is one out there that will work, you just have to find it. I think it was specific to the 800 only by IH, not by manufacturer. If you know if an electric motor shop, they can re-wind the field coil.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
