Not planning on repairing the lever, just going to stick a brass button in it. I have no doubt that I can rebuild the PTO now that the OCC group has me hooked up on parts sources. OCC is the best!

Sam,
Yeah, these guys all know about the mechanical PTO's.Good group and lot's of helpful info.
These are easy as pie to rebuild.
Whilest you have the motor out you can remove the axle and squeeze the channel for it,it helps to tighten up the play in the axle.

Engine is not coming out. I thought the bolts in the front of the engine were missing but it turned out that they are in place. I didn't know the 129-169 have a hole out board from the engine bolt hole. This series is a learning experience for me. Think I pretty well understand them now. A Cyclops I can do with my eyes closed these not so much. Good to learn new things. That said the front axle is not too bad. This tractor has been apart before and it's in pretty decent condition.

The brass button will squeeze right into that ugly hole just fine.

This was on my former 122

The brass button worked just fine ( after I rebuilt the PTO ).

Also, I have WF mechanical PTO's on both my NF as the double spring seems to work better.

I didn't realize that you've never had a Wide Frame before...

You'll be wanting to get a 128 after you get your 149 finished.

I think they beefed up that spring in later models to account for increased hp. That arrangement might be helpful with a tiller set up. Some of them also had a brake too. What year make is this Cub?

My 126's PTO clutch works great and you can feather it in vs a thud you get with an electric clutch.

While you've got the tractor in tear down, some other things folks do is add Dave Kirks super steer kit and his points saver ignition. If your hood hinge is falling apart, folks change them out with a hinge from a QL tractor. Also have a look-see at the axle clevis too to see if it needs to be pinched a bit.

I know I'm talking to a Cub Cadet guru, so I hope I'm not lecturing the master...

One thing you will like about that series tractor is no stop on the hydro lever on forward and reverse. It makes for some quick maneuvering.

Good luck,
Bill

I have 2 number 15's and no brake.

You have the type "B" pto unit.
#15 springs are different then the ones in the diagram you posted.
The pto pulley also has tiny posts (whereas the type "A" does not) on each side of those same springs when all is assembled.

I was planning on re-using the #15 springs, is this a bad idea? Yes it has the posts. Again I'm new to this type of clutch. This is what I have but it has 2 springs number 3 in this pic. I did download the service manual so I think I understand how these work.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
