Thank you both for your help, but how could the spark plug affect backfiring?

Check your timing as suggested, but if you cleaned the points and it ran a while, then started acting up again, it's probably in the condenser. It is not working/grounded properly and the points are burning. File the points, ground the base of the condenser good, make sure the points AND the condenser are hooked up the (-) side of the coil. See if that doesn't fix it. If it runs for a while and quits again..... replace the points and condenser with new.

Ok thank you for your response. So I had to relocate my coil to the frame. I left the condenser on the motor and the lead was long enough to reach the negative side of the coil. Could this be my backfiring and not starting problem?

You mean mounting the coil on the frame? NO. That doesn't matter. The condenser mounting just has to be attached to a good ground. Coil case needs nothing.

Jonathan beat me to it. I too suspect the condenser may be the culprit. If I recall correctly if the condenser is not working properly your points will burn and cause a no start situation.

Alright but that's not my problem. I have spark, it just won't fire just backfires out the carburetor.

Then this sounds like a carb adjustment problem. Is your carb adjusted according to specs? 2 1/2 turns on low idle and 2 turns on high idle, I believe is correct for a 10hp k241 series.

Still condenser. A bad condenser will still fire a plug.

I'm curious if you got your tractor started. I'm having a similar issue. I'm going to recheck the timing.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
